Embracing the motto of his young generation, Adam Gladue, CFD, 25-year-old lead designer at Arts & Flowers Design Studio in St. Louis Park, Minn., continually strives to be true to himself by creating floral art inspired by who he is as a person. Adam’s mother has been a floral designer for more than 35 years, after graduating from The Culinary Institute of America in California’s Napa Valley, Adam took a short detour into the world of culinary arts before returning to his floral roots four years ago. Within this short time, his unique approach to floral design has won him numerous design competitions and spots on educational teams as a teacher and presenter. This talented and innovative designer will be inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) in July, in Las Vegas.

What are the sources for creative inspiration? What renews and rejuvenates your creative spirit?

The practical application of the culinary arts influences me and how I operate. I have realized that, as in the kitchen, I must think three steps forward with two steps back while having a direct objective in sight. My culinary background has taught me to respect the quality and freshness of product; only the best products will allow me to create my best designs.

A relatively new influence on me is the drag and burlesque community. This is where I discovered how one can be different and carve out one’s identity. These individuals are always thinking outside the box and being who they are. The performance community is fearless. All of this I carry into my design work: The culinary arts have given me a good foundation while the performance community feeds my passion to create!

How regularly or frequently do you go on a quest for creative inspiration and rejuvenation?

I am always challenging myself to stay inspired and stimulated. I am constantly going to art museums and design shows and taking educational courses. I also now teach floral design, which totally inspires me. These things keep me passionate and creative. I absorb the excitement and creative energy from people who are passionate about art and design.
