Experienced Copy Editor Needed

We are seeking an experienced copy editor to join our amazing team. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of industry terminology. Responsibilities include proofreading articles, ensuring consistency in style, and collaborating with writers to enhance content quality. Founded in 1897, Florists’ Review Media Group is the premier media company in the international floral industry. We produce monthly award-winning print magazines for florists in the US, FloristsReview.com and quarterly in the UK, Flora-magazine.com for professionals and hobbyists. We also publish books and develop products for the wholesale floral industry.

We have a small team of talented professionals who work remotely around the world.

Our new Copy Editor’s responsibilities include:

• Copy-edit first drafts of submitted text:

– to correct errors in American English grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, word usage, parallelism and agreement, wordiness, repetition, style consistency, and more;

– for content quality, coherence, structure, and organization, to strengthen, clarify, and improve the readability and usefulness of the text, making revisions, as necessary;

– for consistency of house style rules, intended tone, etc., , making revisions, as necessary. (House style is a combination of AP Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style, and house practices.)

• Fact-check all names, dates, statistics, statements, facts about sources, for consistency, accuracy, and veracity.
• Format all text in a consistent, standard style, to assist graphic designers’ understanding of sections, sidebars, etc.
• Write photo captions and credits, suggest pull-quotes, etc., or work with the author to do so.
• Proofread and copy-edit layouts (proofs) for previous and/or additional editing errors (grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.,) and graphic design errors and inconsistencies.
• Must learn Latin names for common flowers.
• Attend virtual biweekly editorial meetings (Zoom).
• Position may also require occasional editing of books and/or website content.

Our ideal candidate will possess:

• 5+ years of experience in editing, journalism, or digital publishing
• Strong detail orientation and fact checker
• Superior communication and writing skills
• Outstanding copyediting skills, with a keen eye for flaws in logic and structure
• BA/BS in Journalism, English, or related field
• An interest in flowers or knowledge of gardening is VERY HELPFUL

This is a part-time position approximately 8-12 hours a week with a flexible schedule. This position is not for someone who plans to also maintain a full-time job.
