On a buffet or in an entryway, this dramatic design will add an air of glamour and elegance to holiday parties.
For many, the winter holiday season is a time for entertaining at their homes and/or offices. This dazzling design, by Erik Witcraft, AIFD, CFD, will make a dramatic and elegant statement on a buffet table, in an entryway or anywhere it is placed. This type of wow factor is surprisingly simple to create and features beloved carnations fashioned into a luxurious and fragrant floral orb, along with a smattering of more exotic Phalaenopsis (moth) orchid blooms.
String a variety of sizes of gold beads onto varying lengths of gold metallic wire. Alternatively, cut varying lengths of Oasis Beaded Wire and/or Oasis Mega Beaded wire, in gold.
Spray contorted filbert/hazelnut branches with metallic gold paint. Arrange the gilded branches into glass vase that is filled with water, for stability. Bind the branches together in several places with paper-covered wire, to create sturdy foundation for the carnation orb.
Carve one-half brick of floral foam into a rounded form. (Alternatively, use a net-wrapped floral-foam sphere.) Wrap waterproof tape randomly around the floral-foam form to create a support “cage,” to help prevent the floral foam from disintegrating. Twist short lengths of paper-covered wire to various “intersections” where the waterproof tape crisscrosses.
Place the floral foam low into the branch structure, just above the vase opening. Secure the floral foam to the branches with the pieces of paper-covered wire at the tape intersections.

Attach the lengths of gold beaded wire onto the branches, in various places.
Cut off the stems of several Phalaenopsis orchid blooms. Apply a drop of liquid floral adhesive to the back of each bloom, in the center, to seal the cut, which will help the blooms last longer.
Press the Phalaenopsis orchid blooms onto the branches, in several locations, where the hanging beaded wires are attached.
