2021 Pantone Colour of the Year Flower Inspiration

creativity and education

Since its inception in 2000, Pantone has been selecting a colour which they believe will embody and characterize the upcoming year, these colours are used by designers and creators alike to stay on trend and create future design concepts. For 2021 they have picked two colours, Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Grey. According to Pantone these colours together convey “a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”

Yellow is bright and bold, communicating a note of positivity, whereas grey is a solid and more reliable colour due to its ability to be non-offensive and neutral. In floral design these colours can complement and balance each other or be used separately to create vastly different moods (think Sunny Yellow or Moody Grey).

There are plenty of bright natural yellow blooms like craspedia, roses, yarrow, alstroemeria, daffodils, mums, tulips, forsythia, and sunflowers. Grey, on the other hand, is harder to come by. The moody nature of this colour can be found in dusty miller, silver kochia, brunia, and many florals also take on a more subdue grey hue if dried. Here is a quick look into some of our favourite floral designs using 2021’s Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Grey.
