Today, it is up to every designer to embrace his or her voice while reducing the creative noise. This fun “pop-art” centerpiece allows one to see possibilities in the most unusual places. Using canned food labels, papier-mâché technique and Oasis Midnight Floral Foam Spheres, you can create unique floral art centerpieces for a contemporary art lover or a foodie’s favorite food-themed birthday party.
Cut a wedge into an Oasis Midnight Floral Foam Sphere. Decide at what angle you would like the sphere to “sit,” and slice off a piece of the “bottom” of the sphere to create a flat base.
Melt wax. Pour hot wax over outside of floral-foam sphere. DO NOT pour wax into the cut-out wedge surface. Let the wax harden. Apply a second layer of wax. Let harden. Remove any wax nibs. The wax will seal the floral-foam sphere, creating a waterproof container.
Make a white-glue/water solution, using a 1:1 ratio. Paint the glue/water mixture onto the hardened wax. Tear the canned food labels into small pieces. Place the pieces onto the surface of the sphere. Brush with the glue/water mixture. If the paper will not lay flat, massage the paper in place with your fingers. Let dry. Seal with another coat of the glue/water mixture. Let dry. To create another element of interest, dip the sphere in a bath of melted wax.
Soak the sphere in flower-food solution. Arrange botanicals into the cut-out wedge section. Create multiple spheres for composite centerpieces.
Use different types of paper, such as handmade paper, comic strips or packaging wrap, depending on the theme of an event or the desire of a client. If you use more delicate paper, seal the construction by spraying it with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating.
