NYBG Orchid Show 2025 – Ode to Mexico

By Jill Brooke

From February 15 through April 27, 2025, The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism, the 22nd edition of the annual celebration of all things orchids at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), carries visitors to the vibrant setting of Mexico. Set off on a journey where the fusion of tradition and contemporary artistry takes center stage amid awe-inspiring displays of orchids and other eye-catching supporting plants. Wander through lush landscapes brought into vivid relief with thousands of flowers that showcase diverse ecosystems and rich culture. Among bright arrangements of orchids in settings inspired by the bold, multicolored designs of Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán (1902–1988), come visit a paradise of tropical beauty—without ever leaving the Bronx.

Barragan was a Mexican architect and engineer. His work has influenced contemporary architects visually and conceptually. Barragán’s buildings are frequently visited by international students and professors of architecture.  Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, the highest award in architecture, in 1980, and his personal home, the Luis Barragán House and Studio, was declared a UNESCO  World Heritage Site.

Mexico’s wide range of ecosystems contain 10–12 percent of the world’s species, making it one of the largest biodiversity hotspots on Earth. This includes more than 1,300 orchid species, about 40 percent of which are endemic—they are not found anywhere else in the world.

What this means is that colorful structures were created to house a massive amount of beautiful orchids. Each and every one is tended to by a staff dedicated to botany in what is one of the best research centers in the world. Previous shows have been inspired by the work of Jeff Leatham as well as others.  This show is routinely the highlight for many and catnip to visitors. A lovely way to spend an afternoon. There are also weeknight activities for drinks and strolling in a garden setting as well as lectures.
